Getting swept away into a piece of historical fiction, full of castles, acts of chivalry, and of course princesses has to be one of my favorite past times. I’m not alone in this harkening for a more romantic time, which is why gothic revival is popular not only in fiction, but also in furnishings and architecture. This Hawkmoth is unique because the eye spots on its wings are clear glass filled with natural pressed flowers. The look is ethereal, as if this moth hails from wood filled with fairies. It all started with a semi-circle bevel. I drew out this pattern knowing that I wanted the bottom to gently drape like the folds of an undulating piece of fabric. I also experimented with clear textured glass which gives this piece a clean and modern aesthetic. In the historic Victorian Geometric style, this cheerful piece might remind you of the Carson Mansion in California or the Painted Ladies in San Francisco. Like the tiles, stained glass made a huge resurgence during the Victorian, with floral and geometric designs commonly found above the front door or in entrance halls.
